I have been rather reluctant to start blogging about this, I worry that if the project is a huge failure than I make this public! So I thought over it a while and decided I shall share it, failure or not. I remember recently one of the comments I received on the blog was that they liked my honestly and sincerity. So here goes!
Some of you may already know my work so are aware of the house theme that has been running for this last year now. For those of you who don't know I will quickly give you the low down...
So, just over a year ago now, me and my family were evicted from our home (the landlord wanted to sell - incidentally the house is still on the market!). Prior to this home wasn't really a significant consideration in my being, I couldn't have told you what home meant to me then. But after this eviction it really confronted and questioned me. Not at any point were we 'houseless' but this experience made us 'homeless'. Being students at the time we couldn't find any other landlord willing to house us, apart from social housing - luckily we live in a country in which when need arises, need is met! However, this resulted in a 70 mile move away from friends and family. So the sensation of not being at home still exists despite being in this new place for a year now.
Now you're wondering why I am giving my life's story for the last year? It is simply the starting point for this body of work, in fact, all my work starts through these resonating experiences in life. I explore issues that move and shake my being.
Here are the works I created within this last year
What Does Home Mean to You? 2010
Notice Requiring Possession, installation shot, 2010 (view video here)
Unheimlich, 2011
Two Windows, 2011
ahouse, 2011
It is the final piece shown that brings me onto what I am working on now. ahouse was a latex casting of the brick wall in my new house and on the other side is wallpaper. I was exploring the detached sensation and disappearance of the home. Throughout the investigations into making this piece I kept thinking about doing the whole side of my house. It is a a brick constructed two storey house, we are end of terrace and that end wall has no windows and doors, which is perfect for my concepts. Of course the costs and hard work involved in this were putting me off. Also I wondered if the small piece pictured above references the whole house without it having to be full scale.
Unfortunately, for me and my purse, this idea/image will not leave me, it haunts me and I think it is those ideas that demand attention are the ones we have to go with. So keep following the blog to see this work in progress, it may be a disaster, but either way will be an interesting journey.
